Name: Gregory Abowd

The purpose of this project is 1) To develop a video annotation system for mobile devices, and 2) use the rich annotation data to make an effective video browsing system.

Problem Definition:

Videos and related applications are widely use and are popular. Users flock to websites like YouTube and share their videos. One of the basic preconditions for effective sharing is proper annotation of the videos. These videos are recorded from a multitude of devices, which include camcorders, web cams, and mobile phones. We have applications like Family Video Archive (Patel & Abowd, 2004), which lets the user tag videos, but only after they have been initially recorded. An early project called the ContextCam, demonstrated the possibility of doing annotation while recording, but used many technologies are not practical. Our overall goal, therefore, is to leverage the availability and functionality of video recording on mobile phone platforms to produce annotation on the fly of video in a collaborative social network, such as a family.
